I AM RATIONALE

Please meet singer /songwriter RATIONALE – real name Tinashe Fazakerley, I have been a fan of his for some time and got to hang out with him once, he is a lovely guy and amazingly talented. So I am thrilled that his album has finally dropped. I sat down with him and asked him a few questions to mark the release of the Self titled Album. Here’s what he had to say, and the advise he has for aspiring artists out there.
Congratulations on your album release! Can tell us a bit about yourself, and where did you get the name Rationale from?
Thank you! Im a songwriter/producer originally from Zimbabwe. I’m obsessed with making music for myself and others. The name rationale comes from a funny story actually. I once worked in a call centre a long time ago for all of 2 days. Cold calling people is soul destroying. I had a script and in it, there was a section called the ‘rationale.’ This section was set up to help lure customers in to whatever was being sold at the time. I quit very quickly but the defbtion of the word ‘rationale’ stayed with me because it summed up how I felt about music and what it meant for me to be a creative.
How long have you been working on the album and if you had to summarise it in a sentence, what would you say?
I’ve been working on it for nearly three years so it’s a big deal that it’s finally out there. I would some it up as being a ‘labour of love but a process I would gladly repeat 10 times over.’
What influences your music?
My taste is fairly eclectic but I think the heaviest influences are soul, R&B & guitar music. People like Donny Hathaway, The Smiths to Pharrel and Prince. It’s pretty broad
How did you get into music?
As kid, I used music as a tool to hideaway form bullies at school. Sad but true…. I picked up the guitar fairly quickly and started writing little songs during my lunch break at secondary school. That sparked a curiosity about how the music I loved to listen was made. Once I found that I could combine live music and my little ideas with computers I was hooked & havent stopped creating since.
What has been one of the highlights of your career?
I think it’s a tie between performing on Jools Holland and performing at the O2. I’ll never forget either of those.
…and any low points?
Loads but No one in particular. It’s a hard business and sometimes it just isn’t fair. However, I wouldn’t be where I am making the music I am without those low moments. It’s all relative I guess
What’s the best advise you got with regards to your career?
Never stop making songs and FINISH THEM.
What advise you would give to any artist trying to make it out there at the moment?
I would say believe in yourself and don’t let others steer you wrong. Follow your heart so you can always own your victories and losses with pride. I’m not sure if got that from ‘Brave Heart’ but it’s worked for me haha!
